Possible Hidden Sources of Corn

Note: This list is a guide - please read all labels of commercially prepared food carefully before using, to ensure the food is corn-free.

  • beverages - soft and fruit drinks sweetened with corn syrup or artificial sweetener, glucose, etc., fruit juice concentrates, frozen juice, instant teas, sports drinks, alcoholic beverages (also refer to glossary in book under Wines, Spirits and Liqueurs);
     
  • breads and pastries - biscuits and biscuit mixes, cakes and cake mixes, doughnuts, frostings, many breads, muffins;
     
  • breakfast cereals - cereals sweetened with corn syrup, cornflakes, puffed corn;
     
  • dairy products - cream, cheese (including cottage and ricotta), frozen yoghurt, imitation cheeses, sour cream, ice cream;
     
  • meat, fish and poultry - bacon, canned tuna, cold cuts (turkey, roast beef, corned beef and silverside), cured meat (ham, bacon), fish sticks, hot dogs, luncheon meat, imitation seafood;
     
  • pastas - canned spaghetti, udon noodles (may be made from wheat);
     
  • pudding and desserts - canned, steamed or instant puddings, custards, custard powder, custard tarts;
     
  • snacks and sweets - corn chips, crispy foods such as French fries, jams, jelly, lollies sweetened with corn syrup or dusted with icing sugar, marshmallows, nachos, peanut butter, potato puffs and chips, tacos, tortillas;
     
  • take away food - Chinese food (routinely thickened with cornstarch), breads, fried foods, hot dogs, cross contamination from corn-containing foods prepared in the area;
     
  • vegetables - baked beans, canned and frozen vegetables in sauce, thickened tomato products;
     
  • other foods - baking powder, bottled sauces and ketchups, canned soups, gravy browning, margarine, pickles, salad dressing, sauce mixes;
     
  • other items - adhesives and gummed paper, artificial sweeteners, bleached white flour, distilled white vinegar, iodised salt, plastic wrap, paper cups and plates may be coated with corn oil, toothpaste, many medications and vitamins, including capsules, solid and liquid medications, ointments, suppositories and lozenges.
